This webpage is place for other whois and related projects that are being worked or or being considered for the future as part of completewhois project. Once project is completed, separate webpage or section of the website will be setup for each project. Currently the following are on our agenda: CRISP IETF Working Group and related projectsNew protocol is actively being developed by CRISP IETF Work Group. CRISP stands for "Cross Registry Information Service Protocol" and this is intended to replace whois in the future. There are currently two different implementations being considered by CRISP: IRIS based on XML and FIRS based on LDAP. If you have experience in either of those areas and would like to help us choose best protocol option or would otherwise be interested in working on new whois technologies, please see IETF CRISP WG page and signup and participate at the WG mailing list - ietf-not43-request@lists.verisignlabs.com (put subscribe in body of email message). Completewhois intends to make practical use of currently developed protocol drafts. Projects that we're working on in this area are:
Historic Whois Data Access ProjectWe would like to setup a system allowing to get historic data and any history of changes. Practical work will likely start in 2004 when we expect to be able to regularly (once/day) get current data from RIRs and this would then be added to our database and access will be setup to allow to see any changes done to particular ip block. Similar will also be done for any domain registry that provides its bulk whois data to us at no charge, otherwise we'll use caching and save capabilities of our whois server to keep track of domains being queries by those users interested in participating in this. Historic BGP Data ProjectBGP data has been collected and stored by several organizations for historic purposes. We intend to use this data to provide more standard bgp view, similar to how you can do it directly on the browser. Additional work in this area will include history graph which shows how ip block announcements have changed over the years and how it all corresponds to whois changes. IP->ASN DNS ProjectThis project involves real-time mapping of ip addresses to AS number through special DNS server. This will involve most likely involve integration of zebra router software with dns server and software patches will be released in public domain. Once setup on our side this will allow for real--time match of ip address to ASN for logging in email or other software without any modification in that software (it will be done in a way that does not break existing dns system either). Currently this project is long way off and if you programmer and expert in zebra and dns and would like to help, please let us know and we can work together on this. Email and Related ProjectsWhile this is not really whois, the people behind completewhois are involved in several email projects trying to solve email abuse problem (spam...) and close security holes in SMTP by either making extensions to existing protocol or creating new protocol. Research on this is conducted in part through IRTF ASRG Research Group and more information and links will be available here on those areas of research. |
